KIWANIS COMMITTEE DESCRIPTIONS

It is our hope that committees will be purposeful and effective in advancing the Objects of Kiwanis. Each committee is encouraged to be active and to report its activities monthly. Each committee will be asked to meet in September or October and review its goals and responsibilities for the year. Throughout the year, committees will be asked to give a report of their activities to the Board. The Board will establish committee budgets after receiving a request from each committee chair.

YOUNG CHILDREN PRIORITY ONE COMMITTEES:

READING IS FUNDAMENTAL (RIF)
Attend three (3) reading sessions per year at local Head Start programs or Kindergartens

YOUTH SERVICES COMMITTEES: (Ages 6 and up)

ADOPT-A-SCHOOL

Currently provides assistance to Barrett Elementary School

  • Goal to add at least two schools
  • Identify local elementary schools needing assistance with reading materials and tutoring
  • Encourage improvement in grade performance through recognition of achievement with the BUG ( Bring Up Grades) Program
  • Enlist the help of local Circle K and Key clubs in carrying out these programs

ATHLETIC AFFAIRS

Plan annual recognition luncheon in May for scholar athletes

  • Select outstanding scholar athletes in all major sports in area high schools
  • Invite and greet honored students, parents, coaches and principles
  • Coordinate a speaker with the Program Committee

YOUTH OF THE YEAR

Plan annual recognition luncheon in May for local high school seniors who have excelled in scholarship, leadership, citizenship and service

  • Two - Four students receive $2,000-$4,000 individual scholarships
  • Invite and greet honored students, parents and principles
  • Coordinate with the Program Committee

MILITARY AFFAIRS

Plan annual recognition luncheon in March for outstanding local area high school ROTC students

  • Award $6000 in scholarships to outstanding ROTC students (2-4)
  • Coordinate a speaker with the Program Committee

Standing Committees

HUMAN AND SPIRITUAL VALUES

  • Promote the Objects of Kiwanis
  • Contact members who are ill or having problems to offer encouragement and assistance
  • Prepare get well cards for members to sign at the reception desk
  • Coordinate member participation in the annual Salvation Army bell ringing campaign
  • Arrange and perform orientation activities for new members

ATTENDANCE

  • Initiate activities to stimulate weekly attendance
  • Contact members who are not attending and encourage them to attend
  • Coordinate with the new member sponsor to encourage participation in a committee
  • Survey membership for suggestions on how to make meetings more interesting

RECOGNITION, FELLOWSHIP AND GREETING

Report outstanding accomplishments of our members to the club secretary. Review newspapers and periodicals for announcements.

  • Promote fellowship and a friendly atmosphere for members and guests
  • Post articles and announcements to the bulletin board
  • Arrange to have one member a week sit at the head table to be recognized for community service or some other outstanding or newsworthy accomplishment
  • Greet members and guests as they arrive at club meetings. Hand out members’ badges.
  • Encourage and usher members to fill up front seats first and to sit at a different table each week
  • Staff the reception desk to assist legible guest sign ups and to ensure that members sign in (legibly)
  • Encourage the wearing of the Kiwanis pin

INTERCLUB

  • Schedule interclub visits with other Kiwanis Clubs in the District and the Division
  • Coordinate interclub projects and activities (Such as the fund drive for Vulcan)
  • Solicit new member prospects for other clubs from our corporate members
  • Assist area clubs with membership and programs as required
  • Encourage our members to participate in other Kiwanis Clubs’ community service projects, fund raising events and District and International Conventions

PUBLIC RELATIONS AND COMMUNICATIONS

Publicize Kiwanis projects in the appropriate local media

  • Inform the membership of committee activities and accomplishments
  • Recognize corporate sponsors who have underwritten Kiwanis projects
  • Produce or update a brief  handout describing our Kiwanis club, its objectives (including the Objects of Kiwanis) and value to the community to be used in recruitment of new members and speakers
  • Supervise website content and improvements

COMMUNITY ENHANCEMENT COMMITTEES:

MAJOR EMPHASIS
Analyze community needs and identify service projects to improve our community and its environment and values committees within our club to address these programs

  • Coordinate fund raising efforts as required

 

SPONSORED YOUTH COMMITTEES: (Key Club & Circle K Club) 

  • Identify opportunities for adding new Sponsored Youth Clubs
  • Maintain a liaison with these clubs, encourage and promote their activities and projects
  • Periodically attend their meetings
  • Assist in planning and coordinating community service projects for these clubs
  • Invite members of these clubs to attend our weekly meetings
  • Report their activities to the board & membership

CLUB PROGRAMS COMMITTEES

PROGRAMS
Meet monthly to identify high caliber programs and interesting speakers for our Tuesday meetings

  • Invite, coordinate travel and lodging arrangements, and host speaker at the meeting
  • Provide the Bulletin Committee with the speakers biographical sketch, the subject of the program and the name of the sponsor/introducer.                                        

BIRMINGHAM BUSINESS HALL OF FAME (BBHOF)

  • Select up to four (4) inductees for the BBHOF
  • Plan annual recognition luncheon in September
  • Plan publicity for the event
  • Invite and greet honored leaders, families and guests

SPECIAL EVENTS                                                                                                  Plan evening social event or fund-raiser for membership

  • Plan holiday event for children/grandchildren of members
  • Plan annual spouse/guest event (usually in February)

MEMBERSHIP ENHANCEMENT AND RECOGNITION COMMITTEES:

MEMBERSHIP

  • Meet monthly to identify potential candidates for membership
  • Submit names to the Qualifications Committee to obtain prior approval before notifying candidate
  • Goal to add 30 new members 
  • Arrange for introduction of the new member at our luncheon meeting. Note: Please limit introductions to less than two minutes.
